Honestly I didn’t understand much of the book and because I didn’t understand it I didn’t like it. Reading the book was very frustrating and difficult. So my “favorite” passages are the ones that I actually understood. It wasn’t till about page 7 (I think) when I actually started to understand something that she was saying.
O Muse, tell me the story
Of all these things, O goddess, daughter of Zeus
Beginning wherever you wish, tell even us.
To me this passage meant that she was getting ready to tell a story of I’m guessing of anything she can think of but mainly particular stories about her life. And that’s what I think made the story confusing. It seems as if she just wrote what she was thinking and feeling at the time “beginning wherever you wish”. so it seemed to not have a specific order or sensible structure.
The part where I really started to understand the book was around page 48 when she started to tell the story about her mother. But the way she speaks is still weird she writes as though she is telling her mother about her mother, but nonetheless I still understood this part rather well. So it was my favorite part. She just went on to talk about how her mother was a Japanese teacher. But just when I was beginning to really understand the book it went crazy on me again. She started to talk about how I’m guessing her mother was drawing her blood, for what I don’t know but that part really confused me. The details were rather descriptive though I could actually imagine her drawing her blood but to be honest at first I speculated whether she was taking drugs, but I think that was just me trying to make the book into something more interesting.
Another part that was confusing/ irritating was the French part. I could not understand it and didn’t even try to me it would be just as irrelevant as the rest of the book. Another part that I wondered about was the constant use of periods. I mean she used a period after every like 2 words it wasn’t confusing but it was just strange. It was probably correct punctuation but like I said just strange
But overall I did not like the book mostly because it was hard to understand for me. Maybe in class when we talk about it I will gain a greater appreciation for it.oh i did like the part in the beginning when she wrote the word period where it was a period and quotation marks and commas. It was interesting
